The Dreamers

Great film. Good film. It’s NC-17 so I enjoyed the T&A but I really enjoyed the political play. A daughter and son of a famous french poet get involved in political movements yet refuse to be swayed by any logical argument. There’s a bunch of incest and young adult sexual tension in the meanwhile that helps the plot keep moving along. But in the long run it’s about the french political soul. It’s about how political action which actually defeats your own personal goals can occur if you’re not willing to listen to the arguments of your enemies. Self-dillusion is possibly most destructive when it enables you to strike against others instead of attempting to destroy yourself. Not that self destruction is such a grand action but at least it doesn’t harm others.

In short I give it 5 for 5 but for very dark reasons. You could watch it for erotic fun and get 3 for 5. You could watch it for the excellent 60’s musical score and get 3 for 5. You could watch it for the difficulty of relationships within a privileged european family and get 3 for 5. But when you bundle it, it’s an excellent fucking film.
